Playing Out

Play Out in Reading This Summer

Playing Out or Play Street sessions are short, resident-led road closures to let children play safely and freely outside their own front door. Hundreds of streets do this all over the UK and it’s having really positive benefits for children and communities.

Due to the current situation, the council is not currently accepting applications for Play Streets. We hope this will change in 2021 as Play Streets can be a safe (outdoor) way for children to play and socialise which is extremely important for their health and wellbeing.

However, now is a great time to start conversations with neighbours and find out if there is interest on your street.

We can help get a conversation started with your neighbours, guide you through the application process and what you need. We may be able to help you with Playing Out kit and safety kit.

You can apply to hold sessions as a one-off or regular events that last an hour or so. Reading Borough Council can give permission to close a section of your road to through traffic.
